Trends in kitchen remodels

My client's often ask for my opinion on remodeling and home decor.  Last week, a long time client asked me for my opinion on the design he chose for his kitchen cabinets.  We took a drive to a custom woodshop in Glendale where the cabinets are being made.  I got a little 5 minute lesson on the latest in kitchen remodels.

The cabinets you see below are made of Alder.  The nice thing about Alder is that it has the strength of maple, a good quality wood that can literally be stained to look like the most expensive of woods.  These cabinets will be made to look like cherry wood.

Over the years we have seen many trends in cabinetry.  In the mid 1980's we saw a lot of golden oak cabinets and in the late 1980's to the early 1990's we saw white washed oak cabinets.

Your kitchen is probably the most expensive room in your home to remodel.  With that in mind here are a few things to consider:  Choose  a look that is in good keeping with the original style and character of your home.  Try to stick with materials that stand the test of time.  I cringe when I walk into a beautiful 1920's built Spanish all to see that the kitchen has been remodeled with hunter green tile, florescent lighting and white washed oak cabinets, YUCK!  Sticking to traditional materials does not necessarily mean that you compromise modern conveniences of today either.  Your original kitchen may not have a dishwasher but you would be making a HUGE mistake if you didn't install one.  Believe it or not I have seen my share of remodels that don't include a dishwasher.

Equally as important is obtaining the necessary permits.  I have personally lived through several remodels and I always make sure to obtain permits.  Contrary to what you might think, I find the City of Glendale very easy to work with.  One of the first questions I ask when I go on a listing appointment and see any new improvements is "Did you get permits?".
