Learning The Value Of A Job

When I was in High School I always had a job.  I worked at the GlendaleGalleria, I baby sat and even worked at fast food restaurants.  I wasn't picky about where I worked I just wanted a job.  I would pick up several applications at the Galleria and fill them out in the food court and drop them off and before I knew it I had a job. These days our kids are picky about where they work.  If it isn't a cool place like Tilly's or Starbucks then forget it!

Today I managed to get a little Christmas shopping in.  My Mom had asked me to pick up a box of candy for her hair dresser of 25 years.  So I popped into See's Candy.  I noticed a handsome young kid working behind the counter.  He was assisting an elderly woman who was getting custom boxes of candy.  This is going to take awhile I thought to myself.  She was a little demanding but he handled her well and apologized to her for being slow saying it was only his third day on the job.  Now this kid looked like he was probably an athlete, but there was no sign of attidute or ego, just a confident kid who was happy to have a job at See's Candy of all places!  What a breath of fresh air!

Learning the value of a job and what it takes to earn a buck is more important now than ever!  I attribute my success to having learned that lesson when I was young.  As parents it is our responsibility to teach that same lesson to our kids, I think I did a pretty good job myself

Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all.
